Secondment 3:  Clinical-hospital Center Dragiša Mišović to University of Crete

“During my secondment, I collaborated closely with Professors Christos Tsatsanis and Dimitris Kardasis, experts in molecular biology. This experience significantly deepened my understanding of transcriptomics processes. The heart of my secondment involved hands-on application of advanced molecular biology techniques. This included precise execution of RNA extraction procedures, careful evaluation of its quality and quantity, and proficient handling of reverse transcription and real-time PCR reactions. These procedures are vital for transcriptomics, allowing a thorough examination of gene expression. Additionally, in a collaborative setting, my peers and I explored primer design. This practical exercise refined my grasp of molecular biology research, providing me with a more nuanced approach to experiment design and execution. During this period, I also had the opportunity to visit a clinical laboratory, under the gracious facilitation of Professor Tsatsanis. This experience was invaluable, allowing me to deepen my knowledge in my primary job. The insights gained in the clinical setting have proven to be immensely beneficial in enhancing my proficiency in my core role. Moreover, I had the pleasure of meeting wonderful individuals in the clinical lab who were more than willing to share their expertise in a collegial manner. Their willingness to demonstrate their procedures and techniques was enlightening. This experience served as a revelation, highlighting the practical applications of the knowledge I gained. It underscored the significant value of cross-disciplinary understanding and how it directly benefits my role as a medical biochemist. Under the guidance of Professors Tsatsanis and Kardasis, the labs provided an enriching environment for delving into transcriptomics. Engaging with experienced researchers and peers, I witnessed diverse perspectives and approaches converging to advance our collective knowledge. This collaborative approach emphasized the crucial role played by each team member, regardless of experience, in the research process. On a personal level, this secondment bolstered my confidence and adaptability in navigating complex scientific tasks. Challenges were met with a steadfast commitment to precision and excellence, resulting in an enhanced proficiency in molecular biology techniques.

Reflecting on this secondment, it stands as a pivotal phase in my professional journey, characterized by significant progress in my understanding and application of transcriptomics and molecular biology. The mentorship of Professors Tsatsanis and Kardasis, along with the cooperative atmosphere in the labs, laid a strong foundation for a profound comprehension of these critical domains.

In conclusion, my secondment was a transformative experience, advancing my proficiency in transcriptomics processes and molecular biology techniques. The technical skills acquired, along with the collaborative spirit in the labs, continue to shape my approach to cutting-edge research and innovation. This secondment underscores the potential unlocked through the convergence of knowledge, mentorship, and shared scientific endeavors.”
