Secondment 1: University of Milan to Clinical-Hospital Center Dragiša Mišović

“My secondment in Belgrade started on June 18th, 2023, and it has been a remarkable and enriching experience. During my stay at the Centar Dragisa Misovic, I had the privilege of witnessing and actively participating in the entire process of sample analysis. From the meticulous pre-analytical phase of sample labelling, the association to the correct patient, and the analysis of the doctor’s requests, to the precise post-analytical phase, where results were diligently verified, I gained valuable insights into every step of the analysis procedure. In particular, after blood samples were separated into plasma and serum and prepared for the actual analytical process, I was able to interface with machines performing complete blood counts, different types of biochemistry tests, immunohistochemistry, among others. As a computational chemist, I had not previously encountered the chance to delve into the intricacies of these laboratory procedures. However, with the invaluable assistance and guidance of my colleagues, I was able to gain a newfound appreciation for these processes.

In addition to learning about the laboratory procedures I was not accustomed to, I shared the expertise and competencies accumulated during my first two years of PhD studies in Milan (Italy). I consider this reciprocal exchange of experiences a key aspect of my secondment, as both parties gained insights into each other’s capacities and how the mutual collaboration will help us reach the overall goal of this project.

During my secondment I have also visited the Department of Medical Biochemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Belgrade that are also part of the CardioSCOPE consortium. I have met the team members and was introduced to their research facilities.

Moreover, the final days of my stay coincided with the first CardioSCOPE summer school, an engaging event held in Belgrade from June 17th to June 19th. Esteemed experts from various fields delivered fascinating lectures on topics ranging from the precise diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome to the optimal design of primers to perform PCR procedures. Participating in the summer school allowed me to expand my knowledge and interact with colleagues from other research centers, exchanging insights and expertise that understanding how each one of us could contribute significantly to the project’s overarching goals.

In addition to the professional experiences, I must mention that my time in Belgrade was enriched by the city’s beauty and the warm hospitality of its people. Exploring the city center, the historic Kalemegdan fortress, and the picturesque confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers left me with cherished memories. The welcoming and supportive environment at the Centar Dragisa Misovic and the Department of Medical Biochemistry, alongside the camaraderie with fellow PhD students and senior researchers, created a conducive atmosphere for learning and growth.

In conclusion, my secondment in Belgrade has been an invaluable opportunity for personal and professional development. The knowledge gained, the practical experience acquired, and the friendships forged have left an indelible impact on me.”
