URV

General Description: The Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV) is a public and comprehensive university made up of 24 Research Departments that welcome annually 12.000 undergraduate students, 2000 master’s students and 1.200 PhDs. Since then, URV has developed a successful model of balanced research and training dedication, which has placed it among the first five Spanish universities in terms of research outputs according to several domestic classification and derived in its international recognition in several rankings; for instance, it ranks 136th in 2021 Young World University Times Higher Education ranking. The URV is also classified in 101-200 in Impact Ranking in the world (Times Higher Education Impact Rankings 2021), 601-800 in World University Rankings (Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2021). By its contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, URV is ranked 46 in SDG 4 (Quality Education), 39 in SDG 5 (Gender Equality), 97 in SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), 73 in SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), 18 in SDG 13 (Climate Action) and 87 in SDG 14 (Life Below Water), due to the excellent research performed in these areas.
Activity type: Higher or Secondary Education Establishments
Role and Profile of key people: Dr. Maria Vinaixa, PI of MIL@B group, is a Senior Researcher and Assistant Professor at Universitat Rovira i Virgili, specializing in Metabolomics and Computational Metabolomics. She established Spain's first Metabolomics Platform, published 53 articles, and actively participates in research projects while teaching at URV and UVIC universities.
Key Research Facilities, Infrastructure and equipment: The Metabolomic Platform aims primarily to develop metabolomic techniques and apply them in the fields of biomedicine and biotechnology, working as an integrated laboratory, where objectives, dimensions and characteristics of the set of samples and experimental designs are defined. The experimental data are processed by our human team, and we facilitate the interpretation of results, providing sound, relevant and useful clinical conclusions for the different research groups. The equipment currently available in the NMR and LC / GC-MS field allows large-scale analysis of body fluids (eg serum or urine), as well as tissues or biopsies of patients and / or animal models. The use of advanced statistics, chemometrics and multivariate algorithms allows transforming a large set of data into metabolic profiles, and ultimately clinical information. Our goal is to introduce metabolomics as a complementary research tool for both clinical diagnoses and to elucidate the unknown mechanisms associated with a particular disease. The Metabolomic Platform is especially aimed at the needs of the Research Groups of the CIBERDEM and the Universitat Rovira i Virgili (URV), but the potential scientific collaborations are also available for other CIBER Groups.
