General Description: UMIL is located in Milan (Italy). It is a leading research and teaching university in Italy and in Europe and is a member of the League of European Research Universities. The Department of Pharmacological and Biomolecular Sciences (DISFeB) has a strong track-record in cardiovascular research and has been recently awarded a ”Department of Excellence” grant (5.6 Mln euro) by the Italian Government.
Role and Profile of key people: Paolo Magni, MD-PhD, associate professor of pathology. Affiliation: UMIL- DISFeB Coordinator of this project; supervised 6 PhD students; PI of 18 research projects. Research interests: molecular pathophysiology of cardio-metabolic diseases (atherosclerosis, dyslipidemia, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome) and the nutritional/nutraceutical modulation of cardio-metabolic risk, aging and health-related issues. He is the author/co-author of over 130 scientific papers in peer-reviewed international journals.
Key Research Facilities, Infrastructure and equipment: DISFeB is cofounder and has full access to 4 novel technological platforms implemented at UMIL (COSPECT -advanced spectroscopy-; INDACO -big data computing and storage-; NOLIMITS -light/electronic microscopy-; OMICs, -facilities for lipidomic, metabolomic and proteomic analyses in the life sciences-). DISFeB research facilities include a fully equipped animal facility, cell culture facilities, FACS sorter, confocal laser scanning microscopy, fluorescence microscopes, mass spectrometry unit, MRI for small animals and up-to-date cellular and molecular biology equipment, including a Sea-horse system.
